Well, it is finally happening…..after years of thinking about writing a blog, I am finally doing it. You may ask yourself: “Why would anybody want to write a blog? Do they think they are an oracle of truth and the whole world needs what they have to offer?”

I suppose there are bloggers who believe that about themselves, but that certainly doesn’t describe me – though I admit there are times when I am pretty convinced I am right about some things! Honestly, I have stood speechless in the face of too many momentous events, too many complex issues, too many situations that called for a clarion voice that I could not find or muster within myself for me to think that I have some “wisdom on demand” to offer and that the world will clamor to receive.

I’m still learning, still making mistakes (the source of most real learning it seems), still struggling to understand mistakes I made in each of my seven decades of life, still coming up empty handed too often to think of myself as an “answer man”.

So, why offer a blog? There are three reasons for me. First, I am so grateful for, and so love, the journey of life that constantly challenges me to be better than I am while graciously allowing me to continue the journey. Second, while not much of an “answer man”, I am pretty good at asking relevant questions. Third, I hope this blog will be a discussion starter and represent something of a dialogue between myself, God, and those who read my words.

It is a fearsome thing to put your thoughts right out there in public for people to see and critique. Being something of a Calvinist at heart, I don’t believe any of us can fully trust ourselves or our tools. That is why it is so important to be open to the critique of others. Critique helps keep us honest and helps us find deeper truth. So, I will welcome your honest critique, whether I like it or not. I do not say this lightly, we are living in an era when lots of people are glad to criticize, but not so many are open to critique; an era when too many people live by the maxim, “Don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!” It is possible to live our basic truths with integrity while also remaining open to new understandings, new (to us) truths.

If this sort of joint exploration of truth on the journey of life appeals to you, then I invite you to sign up to receive my blog. I am not promising to write every week and I am not expecting you to read every piece….I expect some pieces will be interesting to you and some will not. Nobody is keeping score, so the choice is always yours.

Frankly, it may take me a while to find a primary focus for this blog. There is lot to think and talk about. Hence the title, “….and another thing….” But I’ll try to address one subject at a time.

So, I hope you will sign up to receive these musings. I will measure my success not on the basis of how often you agree with me, but how often I help us all think a bit deeper about things that really matter. I think that will be pleasing to God. All the best.   Dick
